Behind The Scenes
Well Happy New Year to you all. I hope you had a great 2018.
For me, 2018 was a fairly immense year with over 80 gigs on 3 different continents. But honestly, what stood out most was getting into studio and finally starting my first original music album, ‘Gaps Between Stars’.
It’s an amazing feeling to get things off the ground after years of planning… and a fair bit of procrastinating. It feels like a sea change.
So over the past 7 months I was delighted and very lucky to have some stellar musicians come in and join me. Emma Langford, who just won the RTÉ best emerging folk artist of 2018, is on backing vocals. Aongus Ralston from The Waterboys is on Bass. Kealan Kenny, fresh off a tour with Sara Ryan is on slide, pedal steel and lap steel guitar.
I got my Sock brothers, Shane and Fiachra Hayes to come in and put down some accordion, fiddle and banjo as a subtle nod to the world of Irish music that I’ve been apart of. And finally I had the wizardry of Graham Murphy and Chris O’Brien on percussion, synth soundscapes, keys and tying the whole project together.
It’s been a long time in the making, but I now know that it was worth all the time and effort. Their musical contributions sound amazing and I am so happy to have gotten to work with all of them on this project.
When it comes to my side of things, I’m usually ridiculously critical of my own work, but with the time, care and effort put in by the lads in The Production Suite I’m very-very happy with how everything is going. I’m now at the stage where I can’t wait for you all to start listening.
So with the recording side of things done I’m now trying to set up tour dates to launch the album in mid July. Then the plan is to nail down a few American venues this coming summer with a follow up Irish and American tour in October/November.
But I’m under no illusions, there’s still a long way to go with mastering, album artwork, duplication, video production, PR and possibly a Kickstarter campaign… But I can see the finish line and I’ve got big plans for the year ahead. I’m more motivated now than I’ve ever been.
So, I’ll keep it all going and I’ll keep you all in the loop as it unfolds.
Happy New Year again, I’m wishing you all the best in 2019.
